WestmeadHospitalChillerReplacement
Detailed delivery of complex hydraulic upgrades and plant room installations in a live operational environment.
Project Overview

Background & Context
Goldman Plumbing Services delivered the physical replacement of two large water-cooled chillers in Westmead Hospital's central cooling plant as principal contractor on a live hospital site. Goldman removed and disposed of the failed chillers, recovered the refrigerant, installed the new chillers and stainless-steel pipework, completed the electrical and BMS works, and commissioned the plant.
The Engineering Challenge
Scope of works included: Demolition, removal and disposal of two failed chillers and redundant services; Certified refrigerant recovery; Rigging and installation of two new water-cooled centrifugal chillers; Installation of new 316 stainless-steel chilled-water and condenser-water pipework, valves, flexible connections and insulation; Electrical works (MCC, distribution boards, wiring) and BMS field installation; Seismic / vibration isolation; water treatment, flushing and cleaning; temporary hire chiller during the works; Commissioning, balancing and testing.
Services provided: Mechanical & hydraulic installation; demolition & cranage; refrigerant handling; electrical installation; BMS field works; commissioning & balancing; principal-contractor site management.
Structured Delivery Approach
Key systems and technologies: 2 × water-cooled centrifugal chillers (~3,300 kW each), Trane; 316 stainless-steel chilled & condenser water pipework; Schneider BMS; Belimo valves; Siemens flow metering; Automatic condenser-tube cleaning and side-stream filtration; AS5149 refrigerant monitoring.
Final Handover & Results
Failed chillers safely removed and replaced in an occupied hospital plantroom, restoring redundancy and cooling to critical clinical areas with minimal disruption and full compliance.
